I always thought it was his Escape From New York look that was aped for MGS. His name's even Snake Pliskin. At least Kojima made no effort to hide the fact. Solid Snake, goes by the alias Lt. J. G. Pliskin in Sons of Liberty. Yeah, he's shameless.

It was, for sure. Although, before that, he ripped off Stallone and Crenna in MG2: Solid Snake, as well as Einstein and Dolph Lundgren, among others. And Kyle Reese for the US box art. And Arnold for Snake's Revenge. Yeah yeah, every insane pro-Kojima guy will say he didn't have anything to do with either of those, but the point is that the entire series has ripped off elements from American blacktion movies, with the added slap in the face of J-Pop that was MGS2.
Say what you will about any and all installments of The Thing, but they're all infinitely better than his pretentious garbage he calls a coherent storyline.
